Some dogs such as the border terrier, need to be hand stripped twice a year. In the springtime (around April) and again in the autumn (around October). The purpose is to retain the natural state of the dogs coat: colour, texture, thermoregulation and its water resistance.

Only the guard hairs are removed when the coat is in the ‘catagen’ stage by pulling the hairs from the coat. When carried out correctly and at the right time, the process is painless as the dead guard hairs are held in by friction only.

Perfect for introducing your puppy to grooming, this dedicated puppy groom is suitable for puppies from three to six months old. The groom includes a bath, brush through of the coat, gentle blow dry, eyes and ears cleaned, paw & eye tidy if needed and nail clip.

Please note: The puppy introduction groom is to introduce them to the environment and its noises. I will take things slowly and at their pace without causing unnecessary stress. After all, this will be a whole new experience for him/her!

It is important to have your dog’s claws clipped regularly and sometimes between grooms. The claws come directly out of the phalanx bones at the end of the dogs toes. When the claws are overgrown, and the toes are splayed out pushing onto the ground, your dog could be feeling discomfort or even pain.

The dewclaw is often a forgotten hidden nail, and when left unclipped, can curl around into the pad or foot causing pain. Veterinary treatment may then be needed.
